How to Make Fashion Photography Portfolio

A fashion photography portfolio is a tool in the photographer’s hand to forward and promote his work in order to get recognition among the right circle of people- the people who can give him more work. But for this to happen, they must like your work. Now this is the tricky part. How do you know what a magazine editor or a photography agency wants to see? What kind of themes do you choose while compiling your portfolio? And, how do you promote your work further, after making of the portfolio? This article strives to answer these questions.

Clarity of thought

When someone looks at a photo, and if that someone has a considerable amount of experience in the industry, he/ she will not be just floored by the aesthetic beauty of it all; what they would actually be looking for will be the clarity of thought- what is the photographer’s thought behind clicking this photo, the way he has? Your photos in the portfolio must conform with a certain definitive style and theme. This is not to say that they should all be of the same place, same person, and clicked back to back, in one go. That is not what we mean here. Actually, the photos can be of different models or objects, but when seen in totality, they should hold a certain meaning to them, and thus, a unifying theme. When the viewer sees this quality in your portfolio, he would definitely give you a chance to meet. Now what kind of theme would work for a particular viewing, depends upon your research about the company/ person before sending in the photos. You must go through the company’s/ person’s previous works in order to gauge their likeness. The models or the objects in your photos must have an innate quality in their expressions or poses, as if they are communicating with the viewer. The viewer must feel something in his/ her heart upon looking at the photos.

If it’s for fashion, show variety of fashion

fashion photography is about clothes, colors, and textures and their impressive use to highlight clothes and accessories. If you are approaching a fashion magazine by sending in the portfolio, ensure that you add a variety of photos with various kinds and colors of clothes. Include both indoor and outdoor. The meaning is to display your expertise in as many styles as possible. You could add variety to it by including vintage, retro, underwater and surreal styled photos. In addition to this, you could also mention, at the back of the photos, the client for whom you clicked those photos. If that name is a popular one, half of your work is done.

Dimensions

There are industry standard portfolio dimensions. 8″x10″ or 11″x14″ do the trick usually. You can even go for the bigger dimensions if the photos are for an exhibition in photo gallery. But attention must be paid that while enlarging the size of the photo, it doesn’t become hazy or pixilated, as this will destroy its charm.

Number of photos in a portfolio

While inserting photos in your portfolio, you should not overcrowd it with all the photos that you can lay hands on. The additions must be selective and according to a theme as mentioned in the beginning here. Saying this, at least 10 photos need to be there in your portfolio.

The overall look of the portfolio

Since it is meant for important business purpose, it should not be made too fancy with girlish, using glitters and stars on the cover. It should carry a slick and classy look, Preferably leather-bound, with your name at the right bottom side of the cover, in golden color, it should reflect an air of seriousness and respect for the art form with clearly marked photographs. It could also contain notes for each photo, telling about the client for whom it was clicked.

Never use one single portfolio for different jobs.

A portfolio is created depending on the kind of client/ company it is to be sent to. Different fashion lines will like to see a differently done portfolio. Different country or region also has effect on the kind of fashion preferences of the people there. All these factors are needed to be kept in mind. Also, if the project is based around black and white photography, you will need to send in a portfolio of your black and white compositions. Likewise, if the project demands expertise in underwater fashion photography, you will need to send your underwater photography samples to the concerned person.

Important- you could also create your portfolio on line by using various social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

You should always do your research about the company or the editor to whom you are sending your portfolio. This will give you an idea about what they are expecting to see in your portfolio. So, all the best with creating your portfolio.

Wedding Fashion Photography

Like other forms of fashion photography, wedding fashion photography is another kind that is very lucrative and a specialized sub-field of fashion photography. But there is a lot of ambiguity regarding the tips and ways in which one could click good wedding photographs- this is a problem tormenting the amateurs, especially. With so much competition and so little information available on the topic, it sometimes becomes hard for a learner. Add to it, there are various factors like cost, equipment, assignments, and logistics problems, which need to be handled at the same time.

It’s expensive- As you know, a wedding photography project will require a lot of things that you will need to hire from somewhere. Also, if you are using film for photography, it will incur high costs to get the rolls developed.

But here are some tips that will help you in pre-wedding photography plan-up and other preparation in order to ensure a smooth photo shoot.

Take some practice shots of the venue before the function- This will be a good practice to inculcate and the one that will save you from all the problems that can come along aperture and shutter settings on the D-Day. Especially, when using a film in the camera, you are never able to see the preview of the clicked photos before the roll gets developed in the processing lab. The digital camera users are,in that way, on a more advantageous side. Many a times such a thing may happen that the clicked photographs turn out to be much too dark and under-exposed, thus making for wasted efforts, time and money. Moreover it will spoil the bride and groom’s memories. The simple solution for handling this problem is to pay the venue a visit 2-3 days prior to the wedding and take some sample photos of the entire venue; process the reel to see if the photos are suitably exposed and that there is no problem in them; if not then, change your aperture, shutter and other camera settings and try clicking the same pictures again. When you get the desired kind of photos that are correctly lit, note those settings and return on the wedding day, with the camera pre-adjusted to the noted down settings. This will save you from all the embarrassment that you could, otherwise, have to go through while explaining or giving excuses about the shoddy work.
Always bring along back-up equipment- You can never be sure of when, where and how you will run into trouble due to an unforeseen defect in or a shortage of equipment. It is thus recommended that you plan in advance and always bring along at least two cameras, and a good amount of film stock/ memory cards, as you never know exactly how much memory space could go into the entire shoot. It is a nice and highly recommended idea to bring along more than 2 backup batteries and two chargers so that you could recharge the used batteries while shooting with the remaining fresh batteries, and the repeat the cycle.
Take care of your memory cards- When you carry multiple memory cards for a wedding photography, it is important to keep the used cards separate from the empty cards. As you keep filling the cards, hand it over to your assistant simultaneously, who will dump the data from those memory cards onto a separate portable hard disk. You can use two separate pockets for placing these memory cards separately. Once the data has been recorded onto the hard disk, don’t just format the
memory card. Keep it because you never know, what if your portable hard disk suddenly gets corrupted? Once you are back from the wedding and in your studio, start copying the data from the hard disk to clearly labeled DVDs and store them separately. This serves as a back-up of the back-up.

Consider using a 2nd photographer- Taking hundred’s of pictures throughout the day does become very tiring and as a result, may set in an element of monotony in the photographs that you click. Having an additional photographer will bring about a range in photography styles. What you may have missed, he may have captured, thus adding to the efficiency level in the project.
The essential photography equipment- When going for a wedding photo shoot, having the following equipment is a must.
Film or camera- Be certain as to what format do you want to use. You should use only that format with which you are most comfortable. It is recommended that you use a DSLR on an occasion like a wedding as then, you have the option of simultaneously checking the quality of each shot for lighting and composing.
Extra batteries- Use extra batteries along with multiple chargers. Make sure that you bring fully charged batteries to the venue on the D-Day.
Lens- you may want to carry multiple lenses of different focal lengths for the wedding, as in a wedding, a photographer needs to take varied shots- portraiture and landscape with multiple subjects and sometimes capture crowded frames too.
A flash unit- Always carry a separate flash unit along with the camera that can be mounted onto the camera body to compensate for low lighting. This is required, especially when you are using an SLR instead of a DSLR.
So, basically these are a few things that you need to keep in mind when preparing for wedding fashion photography. For those who are amateur photographers- you need to invest many hours in the preparations as you don’t want any kind of problems in exposure, etc on the wedding day.

Points like, source and extent of natural lighting, possibility and extent of artificial lighting, how far is the place, and it’s viability from the finance perspective.

The Theme- Once you have got a photography assignment, you need to sit and think about the possible theme for the given assignment. The given themes can be quite generic many a times, but it depends entirely on you how you could add a new perspective to it. For e.g. – travel is a pretty generic theme. But, what thematic variables you could play with, is entirely up to you.

The Stylist- Once a specific theme has been decided, the next thing you do is contact a stylist for deciding on the color scheme, clothes and accessories for the shoot. One thing that is of utmost importance is that you should have a good rapport with each and every team member who is working with you. You should carefully select your team. The selected people must understand your viewpoint and should complement your approach with their suggestions and styles. After a good brainstorm, single out the ideas you want to work with.

If you already know someone who is very good at this job, fine, otherwise you need to find one. Contacting their agencies/ agents and getting their portfolios for a look is a good way of beginning. You need to get the make-up artist fully understand how you want the look of the model to be.

Hiring the other crew- The creative director, according to your needs, designates the most suitable crew to you. You could also hand-pick your own team. Once all these things are done, you need to work out on the entire schedule of the shoot with your assistant/s. and so; call sheets are made and sent to each and every team member on the project. But make sure, that you have received a confirmation mail from all the artists’ agents before you prepare these call sheets.

Prop-prepping- the entire required prop that you have decided over should be shopped for and stacked well in advance. Your stylist for color and clothes helps you in selecting the right props depending upon the theme, the selected model and the overall feel of the composition.

Go find your shot. You need to continuously move and take several shots from several different angles in order to determine and confirm the best shot. You never know what beautiful moment you will capture unless you try and explore.
Experiment with lighting. Try different variables of soft and hard lighting, high contrast versus low contrast, burned-out patches in the image and color filters. The only key to bring out unprecedented beauty in your shots is your visualization. The more vivid you could visualize the more beautiful shots you shall be able to compose. Try and reach beyond the conventional rules of lighting. Burn it, diffuse it, cut it,
Keep multiple lenses and filters handy. You never know when you could discover a shot worth taking, in a required manner. Photoshop is not always that fulfilling when it comes to post-shoot effects. Try and cover up for as much of effects as possible during the shoot itself.
Depending upon your varying requirements of in-studio photography or street photography, there are various kinds of lenses for fashion photography. They are as follows: Variable Zoom Lenses- Such zoom lenses , with their adjustable focal length, can give a photographer greater flexibility while composing a frame. The various lens types that this category covers are Telephoto lens and Fish eye lens, both of which facilitate longer focal length capacities thus offering to capture greater wide angles. Fashion Portrait Photography

Fashion portrait photography is the most common form of fashion photography. All professionals and amateurs practice it, every model poses for it. This term is very broad in itself and encompasses several other forms of fashion photography too. But this article is not about those forms. It is rather about the correct artistic and aesthetic ways of clicking impressive fashion portraitures.

For amateurs or first time photographers, it is important to choose models carefully. Usually, for the first time, one should work with someone with whom you share a certain amount of comfort level. This will help in reducing your nervousness, which will be there at the time of photo shoot because you yourself would be weighing under the fact that it is your first time. I could be asking yourself, ‘Am I doing the right thing?’ This is why having an acquaintance or a friend as a model will help.

A portrait is actually a photo in which all the emphasis is given to the face of the person, thus capturing that person’s emotions. In such a photo, the person directly looks at the viewer thus, giving the effect that the photo is trying to say something to you. A few kinds of portrait photography are family portraits and graduation day portraits. Popularized by the art of painting in a quite distant era, it was taken up by photography, and thus it has evolved till now. Following are some tips for fashion portrait photography.

Finding model- As stated above, if you are an amateur, you can approach your friends to pose as models. If you are a professional or have got a formal training in photography, you could contact the numerous modeling agencies out there and give them the description about the kind of model you are seeking. You could use the Internet to get the contact numbers of such agencies.
Practice indoor and outdoor- When you are new to photography and still trying to specialize in some or the other types of photography, one thing to do is to try out both kinds of portrait photography- indoor and outdoor. This will teach you how to manipulate light in both the cases. Though, while shooting outside, you have the advantage of natural light from the sun, it is not the case while working indoors. In an indoor setup, you need to know about your lights and flash. If your budget is lower and stops you from hiring lights, you could make use of the windows- open them wide and allow all the light in. You would be lucky if you have a home with large windows. Using flash is another good option provided you know its technicalities.
Knowledge of aperture and shutter speed- It is important to know the controls and options of your camera. The aperture and shutter are two very important elements of any camera that control the amount of light falling on the light sensors, thus dictating the overall exposure of your photo. For a well-lit portrait, you must adjust them to optimum levels. While shutter speed is the amount of time for which the light will fall on the sensor plate, aperture (also known as f-stop) is the amount of light falling on the sensor. A higher f-stop means lower lighting and vice-versa.
Kind of lenses to be used- You have a variety of lenses to choose from. A telephoto lens or a wide angle lens allows more flexibility to the photographer in his composition. A wide-angle lens would also capture the ambiance and the surrounding props in the portrait while telephoto lens is limited in panoramic scope but concentrates entirely on the subject. Prime lenses don’t offer any options of zoom but they are good when it comes to photographing in low light; they give higher aperture shift options thus making the photographer’s task easier without using ISO too much.
Practice on people around you- As a beginner, you must practice portrait shots on people around you (like family or friends) before you call a model for a proper shoot. The Best of Family Portrait Photography: Professional Techniques and Images- a book by Bill Hurter and many other such books will come handy in going through family portrait photographs in order to know about the right techniques.
Capturing the emotion- Portrait photography is all about capturing the real emotions of the people in it. The clothes, the lighting, and the props should all be used according to the character of the subject. Some of the great photographers.
Try different styles- For amateurs, they still need to find what works for them and what doesn’t. For finding this out, it is important that they do a lot of experiments early in their career in order to specialize in certain styles.
These are certain tips for fashion portrait photography. There is an abundance of information on this subject on the Internet. One can check out photos and interviews of photographers who tell about how they achieved their shots. You will also find video tutorials on the same subject. So read, see, learn and click.

Some tips for the photographer- ‘How to handle the models’

In order to ensure a smooth photo shoot and promote perfect understanding between you (as a photographer) and your model, it is necessary that you talk to the model and get to know him/ her well before the photo shoot. It is very important for you both to open up and talk freely. This way you both can get to understand each other’s viewpoints and personalities, thus making it easier for you to work with each other. Following are some modeling photography tips for photographers.

Early to set and early to set up- It is essential for you, being the photographer, to arrive on the sets on D-day well before the models turn up. It’s always in the best interests of the team to get the entire set ready and set up all the equipment in the desired manner. This helps relieve a bit of the photographer’s tension and so, he can, with a free mind, sit with the models and explain them what exactly he wants. Also, it would be a nice idea to pre-plan with your make-up artist, about all the accessories that are required for the shoot. Accordingly, you can bring them to the sets with you.
Maintain an open communication environment- For you to work with the model and for the model to give you what you want, it is necessary that you don’t just stand there quietly and click photos; it will require for you to tell the model exactly -how to move, how much to move and what expressions to give. You should always give encouraging remarks to the models to make them feel more comfortable and confident around you. You should also invite opinions and constructive criticism from the models, as you never know what the other person has to offer from his/ her own experience.
Give your model a comfortable working environment- In any creative field like photography, or even movies, you have to take care of your talent team. For you to harness the desired performances out of them, it is important for you to make them feel comfortable and at ease, as a stressed mind can never function in a required manner. Creativity has to flow freely and smoothly and, it is for this reason that you should always take care of your models’ needs pertaining to privacy, need to bring along someone to the sets (to add to the comfort factor), the kind of music to set in the mood, etc.
Encourage and motivate everyone on the sets- Fashion shoots tend to last for long hours and so, it becomes tiresome for the crew. It is your responsibility to keep people fresh and motivated. For doing this, you yourself have to be active at all the times and be ready to move from here to there with speed. Frequent words of motivation and appreciation will further make them give their 100 percent.
